The giving of grants to local village based volunteer groups that organize and carry out housing repairs for those in greatest need has continued through 2008. However in one of the main areas (Vizhinjam) there is to be a massive industrial development of the coastal area to create an International Container Port. Part of the preliminary work to develop the infrastructure means that whole arrears are being compulsorily purchased by the Government. Until it is clear which lane areas are involved, we have had to decide to ‘suspend’ the giving of grants for housing work in this area only. Watch out for more news on this!
